CS2 Big Head Mode and the LAR rifle: what the 28 October update added
October 29, 2026 · by MattCS
Valve pushed a Counter-Strike 2 update on the evening of 28 October 2026, and its patch notes list four small changes: a hold or toggle option for silent reloads, plus three bug fixes. Two bigger things came with it that the notes don't mention. Casual now has a Big Head Mode, where your head and voice change with your K/D, and the game files now hold a model for a new weapon called the LAR. Players and dataminers found both within minutes.
I played Big Head Mode the night it went live and went over the LAR leak in this video:
What is Big Head Mode in CS2?
Big Head Mode is a "mutator", a new CS2 term for a rule that changes a mode. When it's on, the map selection in Casual shows "Active Mutators: Big Head Mode". Dataminer Thour posted it minutes after the update:
How it works, as CS2 news account Ozzny summed it up:
- The better your K/D, the bigger your head and the deeper your voice, in voice chat and in your agent's voice lines.
- The worse your K/D, the smaller your head and the higher your voice.
TheCSTimes adds that everyone in the lobby sees and hears the change.
That matches what I saw in my own Casual match: the players with the most kills had the biggest heads, and one player going 14-6 had a huge one. The game files back up the voice part too: the update added a sound file called bighead_pitch.
Where can you play it?
In Casual. TheCSTimes first reported it on the Defusal Group Alpha maps, which SIH lists as Dust 2, Mirage, Inferno and Vertigo. SIH later saw it on Defusal Group Delta and thinks it rotates. The update's menu code supports that: in Casual on Valve's official servers, it checks every second which map groups have "rotating map group mutators" and shows them on the map buttons.
Does a big head mean a bigger hitbox?
Nobody has confirmed it. In my match the big heads felt easier to hit, but Valve hasn't said whether the hitbox grows with the model. It also hasn't said how long the mode will stay, or whether it's tied to Halloween.
The LAR: a new weapon in the files, not in the game
You can't buy the LAR, and Valve hasn't announced it. What the 28 October update added is the weapon's art and animation files. In SteamDB's GameTracking-CS2 repository, which tracks every CS2 build, the update added:
- a model,
weapons/models/lar/weapon_rif_lar.vmdl(rifis the prefix Valve uses for rifles, likeweapon_rif_ak47) - an equipment icon and a base weapon image for the inventory
- textures in a folder named
do_not_ship - animations: the skeleton that was called
m14is nowlar
That last point is the link to the M14 that leaked in September. Dataminer aqua spotted the link:
Gabe Follower describes the model as "a winchester with a per-bullet reloading mechanic", so you'd load it one round at a time like a lever-action rifle:
Here's the icon Thour pulled from the files:
Valve hasn't said what LAR stands for. SIH thinks "Lever Action Rifle" is most likely, which fits the reloading. Someone has already loaded the model into the game, and to me it looks a lot like a Marlin 1895 Trapper lever-action rifle.
What about the stats?
There are none in the game right now. When the M14 showed up in September, its stats were in CS2's weapon file: $4,100, 115 damage like the AWP, five rounds plus five spare. We went through every number here. The 22 October update took the M14 out of that file again, and the LAR doesn't have an entry yet. So the September numbers are the last ones Valve put in, and they may change.
Still unknown:
- which side can buy it, and which slot it takes
- whether it keeps the M14's iron-sight aim (the M14 had one zoom level and no real scope)
- when, or whether, it ships
- whether it gets skins (no case or collection has been announced)
Valve hasn't given any timeline, and the textures sit in a folder called do_not_ship, which points to placeholder art.
What Valve's patch notes say
The full official notes for 28 October:
- Added an option to switch Silent Reload Mode between Hold and Toggle. With toggle on, you can let go of the reload button once a silent reload starts; tap it again to cancel and do a fast reload instead.
- Fixed cases where the first sound of a reload could be heard even during a silent reload.
- Fixed liquid rendering black on AMD video cards.
- Fixed some sound and UI bugs when rewinding during demo playback.
That's all Valve wrote. Every CS2 patch note is in our CS2 update log.
