How the calculator works
A trade up contract takes 10 skins of one rarity and returns one skin of the next rarity, from the collections of the skins you put in. Every input adds 10% to its own collection, shared equally by that collection's next-rarity skins. That's why one cheap skin from a collection with a single expensive result can be worth more than its price.
The float of the result comes from your inputs. Each input float is scaled to 0-1 within its own range, the ten are averaged, and the average is placed into the result's range. Valve changed it to work this way with its October 2025 trade up update; it didn't publish the formula, so this is the rule players have measured since.
Knife and gloves trade ups take 5 Covert skins. Each one adds 20% to its collection, and the result is one of the knives or gloves from that collection's case. Valve doesn't say how the knife is picked within a case, so we count every knife or glove skin in it as equally likely, the way case openings are understood to work. A Doppler counts once: its phase is decided afterwards, so we price it at the plain market price.
Prices are the median listing across the 17 marketplaces we track, refreshed daily. A median keeps one marketplace with an odd price from skewing the result. Marketplace fees aren't included, so the money you actually get for the result is a few percent lower.
Trade up FAQ
- How does a CS2 trade up contract work?
- You exchange 10 skins of the same rarity for one skin of the next rarity. The new skin comes from the collections of the skins you put in. All 10 must be StatTrak or all normal; since May 2026 Souvenir skins can go in as normal ones.
- How are trade up odds calculated?
- Each of your 10 skins adds a 10% chance to its own collection, split equally between that collection's skins of the next rarity. Ten skins from one collection with two possible results give 50% each; one skin from a second collection adds 10% to that collection's results.
- How is the output float calculated?
- Each input float is first scaled to 0-1 within that skin's own float range, the ten scaled values are averaged, and that average is placed into the output skin's range. So a skin at the bottom of its range counts as 0 even if its float is 0.15.
- Can you trade up Covert skins into knives?
- Yes, since October 2025: 5 Covert skins give one knife or pair of gloves from the case of one of the skins' collections, and 5 StatTrak Covert skins give a StatTrak knife (gloves don't come in StatTrak). Covert skins from map collections, which have no case, can't make a knife. Switch the calculator to 5 Coverts to see the odds.
- Are trade ups profitable?
- Usually not on average: the expected value is often below the cost, and selling the result costs a marketplace fee on top. The calculator shows the expected value, the return and your chance of getting a skin worth more than you paid.
